The only way I can make myself put time into my own marketing, when my clients' needs are screaming for attention, is to schedule the time every week. For a long time I operated on the principle of “when I have free time I'll do it.” Free time never came. Now I lock it into my calendar each week. It's still a struggle, but at least I honor my commitment to myself.

However, I have worked at companies who have been so busy with (and focused on) their own clients that they haven't had the time to practice what they preach in their own company. It comes down to time. If you have all the business that you can handle then this is less important because you will use your portfolio of client work to show your abilities.

My husband, and his father, and his uncle, and his best friend, are all mechanics– and they all go years without changing the oil in their cars, or will ride on metal-to-metal brakes for a while, or will otherwise put off their own vehicles, even though they encourage customers every day to get these very problems fixed ASAP. :o) Nature of the beast, I think.

As the result, as soon as hard times hit the economy, this company went under because it hadn't built up it's brand the same ways it was doing for other companies.

Companies must “Practice what they preach!”
